Rainwater Tanks

By storing rainwater run-off from your roof, rainwater tanks can provide a valuable water source for flushing toilets, in washing machines, watering gardens and washing cars.

If you decide to install a rainwater tank then you must ensure that:

  • The tank operates separately from the main water supply system. An appropriate backflow prevention device is installed and commissioned by a licensed plumber. This prevents water from the tank siphoning back into the water supply system.
  • The tank is connected to the stormwater drainage system so that overflow from the tank can be captured in the same way as normal run-off in the area.
  • The down pipe feeding the tank is installed correctly. A first flush device may be installed to ensure that water and rubbish is not left sitting in the tank between rainy periods; and
  • All plumbing work associated with the installation and/or maintenance of the tank is to be carried out by a licensed plumber in accordance with appropriate regulations.

When installing rainwater tanks there are a number of factors that should be considered, including:

  • Local Council Planning Approval
  • Environmental Regulations
  • Public Health Regulations
  • Legal Requirements
  • Underground or Aboveground
  • Type of Rainwater Tank
  • Use of Rainwater from the Tank
  • Size of Rainwater Tank
  • What Type of Connections
  • Amount of water able to be collected from your roof

To assist the general public understand the rules and regulations which must be complied with. The Master Plumbers Association of NSW recommends using your local Enviroplumber.
