The latest federal government budget has announced new measures that will encourage home and small business owners to make energy-efficient upgrades to their premises which will save them money long term.
Curran Plumbing and Electrical have been installing, upgrading and repairing energy-efficient features for many years. With the latest federal budget focus on retro-fitting existing homes with green technology, it’s an ideal time to plan some eco-upgrades.
The new measures will help the Australian environment, and property owners who occupy their residential or business premises or are landlords. Their upgrades could also help the tenants who pay the energy bills.
The budget acknowledges that more affordable energy bills are critical to improving the lives of individual Australians. It also notes that Australian homes are largely energy inefficient. On a global scale Australian homes perform poorly when it comes to energy use, with Australian ranking 58 out of 63 countries on energy use per capita
What does this mean to me?
The new budget emphasis on helping improve the energy efficiency of existing homes, not just new builds, should make it easier for property owners to finance eco-friendly electrical and plumbing upgrades.
Among other energy measures that will help save money, including bill relief, the budget features a Tax Deduction for Energy Upgrades.
Home owners can benefit from loans through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) partnership with banks and other lenders on upgrading homes with battery-ready solar PV, modern appliances and other improvements.
An expansion of the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme to existing homes will also help people purchasing or renovating – or renting – to obtain a star rating of the home’s energy performance.
Small businesses with a turnover less than $50 million will be eligible for an energy incentive that encourages heating and cooling upgrades. The Small Business Energy Incentive offers a bonus 20 per cent deduction on total eligible spending that supports electrification and more efficient use of energy (from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024).
